Our friend Svanny at Holtsmuli posted the following on her website www.urvalshestar.is , her farm Holtsmuli is just 40km nearer to the volcano than Hamarsey.

Iceland is really proving why it is often called the land of fire and ice these days.  In less than one month we have had volcano eruptions in two different places, and now the second, and much more serious one is taking place under a glacier!  The problem with that is that when the hot lava hits the ice then it explodes and poisonous ashes are produced.  This has very extreme effects as anyone can read about in the news for traffic in the air.  Because of this volcano erupting here basically in the back yard of Holtsmúli, almost all airports in Europe are closed, and major chaos is taking place as a result.

In addition to making traffic in the air impossible, this is a dangerous situation for farmers, especially horse farmers in the vicinity of the glacier.  The ashes are extremely dangerous if they are consumed, and the only solution is to take all the horses, and there are thousands of them, that are living outside, and putting them indoors so that they don´t eat the ashes.  So far the winds are blowing from the West and North, making life very difficult for farmers South and East of the glacier, but so far the horses in Holtsmúli are not in any danger.  We already have a plan for what to do if the winds change their direction, and we will make sure that all the horses in Holtsmúli will be safe.

We have ourselves made plans to make sure our mares at Hamarsey will be safe. We can now in a matter of minutes take them all in the riding hall at our good neighbours farm at Galtastadir, the next farm to Hamarsey. This natural disaster is coming at a bad time, now that many of our mares have only weeks until their foals are due.

Eldgosið á Fimmvörðuhálsi var gríðarfallegt, en lítið og sætt gos sem við skoðuðum í návígi nokkrum dögum eftir að það byrjaði. Að minnsta kosti var það lítið og sætt í samanburði við það sem nú er uppi á teningnum. Eldstöðvar undir Eyjafjallajökli eru vaknaðar og spúa ösku og brennisteini. Bændur í sveitunum við gosstöðvarnar, undir Eyjafjöllum og í Skaftártungum eru ekki öfundsverðir þessa stundina. Þeir hafa haft sig alla við að bjarga hrossum undan öskufalli enda getur askan verið banvæn dýrum sem komast í snertingu við hana.

Áríðandi tilkynning til eigenda útigangshrossa

Eigendur útigangshrossa um allt land þurfa að búa sig undir verja hross sín fyrir öskufalli. Of seint er að bregðast við eftir að umtalsvert öskufall er skollið á. Miðað við veðurspá fyrir næstu daga er mest hætta á öskufalli í Rangárvallasýslu en hrossaeigendur á öllu suður- og suðausturlandi þurfa að vera í viðbragðsstöðu.

Þar sem mikið öskufall verður er hrossum bráð hætta búin af því að anda að sér öskunni, drekka mengað vatn og éta hana í sig með menguðu fóðri. Því þarf að hýsa öll hross á þeim svæðum. Sé það ekki hægt þarf að flytja hross á öruggari svæði.

Forðast skal þó flutninga á fylfullum hryssum, einkum af innan við mánuður er í köstun. Sé ekki hægt að hýsa þær með góðu móti skal þeim haldið heim við hús þar sem hægt er að vatna þeim með hreinu vatni og verja fóður fyrir mengun.

Skapist hætta á langvarandi flúormengun er mikilvægast er að verja trippi í vexti því þeim er hættast við varanlegu tjóni á tönnum og beinum. Þá er fylfullum hryssum sérlega hætt við kalkskorti í blóði sem er lífshættulegt ástand.
